These Are My Obsessions – Vol. VII

1. Ambre Pure Essence Oil. Have you ever wondered what heaven smells like? Well, order some and then you’ll know. Seriously, it is the most amazing perfume I have ever smelled. (h/t to my favorite H-town residing redhead for discovering it!)

2. Game of Thrones. The book, the HBO series — I love ’em both. And I do admit it has taken me longer than it should to read it (getting up at 5am for boot camp forces me to cut off reading time much earlier than I’d like!) I’m really enjoying it. it’s like the Lord of the Rings trilogy meets World Without End swirled in with the smuttiness that only something HBO-worthy can provide.

3. Blush pink. I don’t know what it is about it but I am currently obsessed with all things blush pink. Maybe it’s because it’s so soft and romantic looking (Happy Belated Valentine’s Day!). Maybe it’s because it’s barely a color — nude with the tiniest splash of rose. I am in lurve with it.

4. Tarte Cheek Stain in Tipsy. I picked mine up at the recommendation of a Sephora consultant and I don’t know how I’ve lived this long without owning a cheek stain! The color is perfect for me and the stain adds a subtle dewiness that I think is awesome. Plus, it stays on SO much longer than a traditional powder blush. I am a huge fan.

5. The Voice. Adam Levine in all his tattoo’ed sexy glory, Blake Shelton’s charming drawl, and Cee Lo’s completely creepy cat = what more could you ask for? Oh yeah, a bunch of tear-jerking life stories of amazing vocalists. Amazing. Only downside? Xtina. Don’t get me wrong, I think she is amazingly talented, but her personality and ridiculous cleavage on the show make me completely crazy.

Update — I ordered the cobalt blue skinny jeans from Eloquii I posted about here. I adore them. No, really. They are fantastic.

*Please disregard the poor lighting and my scary facial expression!

These Are My Obsessions – Vol. VI

1. High-waisted, vintage/retro swimsuits. Maybe. I really like the one  below from Mod Cloth but I’m not sure how it would look in reality. I’m concerned about the long-butt-effect. I’d like to try one on but it seems like they are most widely available online….hmm….

Bathing Beauty Two-Piece via Mod Cloth -- I'd prefer the black.

This is the dress I bought for the gala. LOVED IT! (Pic from Pinterest because it is no longer available from eShakti)

2. eShakti. eShakti is an amazing online clothing boutique offering sizes 0-26W with CUSTOM SIZING. You heard me. Custom sizing. After first hearing about eShakti while reading What the Frock?, I ordered a dress for a formal work-related event. You can order any item in a standard size or pay an extra $10 (I think, it may be less than $10) for the item to be custom-sized based on your measurements. Plus, when you sign up/register for a log-in, they send you a $20 credit for your next purchase. The dress I ordered was high quality (fully-lined, with pockets) and fit better than anything I’ve bought off the rack in years. You even can include your height and the height of the shoes you plan to wear so your dress is the perfect length!

3. My Erin Condren planner. One of my co-workers turned me on to Erin Condren and I fell madly in love. I ordered a 2012 planner for myself and one for my sister for her birthday. It’s colorful and fun and has plenty of room to accommodate my obsessive list-making ways. She sells tons of cute stationary and labels and all kinds of other personalized goodies.

Erin Condren Planner - I had mine done in custom orange.

4. Old Navy Boyfriend Jeans. You have no idea how much I want these jeans. They look so comfortable and effortlessly broken in and shock of all shocks, Old Navy actually got the wash right for once! Completely love them. Unfortunately, my Old Navy was out of my size. And they’re out of my size online. Someone please buy a pair and tell me that they are as awesome on as I imagine them to be.

5. I Wanna Dance with Somebody by Whitney Houston Pandora Station. Seriously, make one. You won’t regret. It’s my go to Friday jam session. Whitney, Michael, Janet, Journey – I love it all.

Bringing it Back: These are my Obsessions – Vol. V

I know it’s been many moons since I did an obsessions post, but between Pinterest, my online shopping addiction, and my new-found love for style blogs, I thought I’d bring back my Obsessions series. Enjoy!

1. Eloquii. This is Limited’s new plus-size clothing line. Even though I haven’t actually ponied up the money and bought anything yet, I stalk their website constantly and drool over beauties like these:

Belted Tweed Jacket

Open Drapey Striped Cardigan

Curvy Fit Skinny Jeans in Cobalt

How cute would that cardigan be with a skinny belt? Now only to decide whether to get the skinnies in red or cobalt blue….

The Fun Bun

2. The Fun Bun. This has become one of my go-to hairstyles, especially when I over sleep. =) It’s really easy, fun, and chic. For me it works best when my hair is partially air-dried. I have more control over my crazy layers when it’s still kind of wet. I can’t make it work when my hair is completely dry because it’s too fine. I love the illusion of volume without having to tease it! Oh, and if you aren’t following the beauty department, you should be! So many awesome tutorials and tips. Definitely worth checking out.

3. Warby Parker. I’m sure I’m late to the party on this but I am in love with Warby Parker glasses. Their home try-on program is completely genius. I tried on five fabulous pairs last month and plan to order a pair next week.

Preston in Whiskey Tortoise

4. Brussels Sprouts. In the last year or so, B-sprouts have become my absolute favorite vegetable. I think they’ve been underrated and overlooked for a long time because our parents and grandparents didn’t cook them in an appealing way — steamed = bleck. I prefer mine roasted in olive oil with fresh ground pepper and sea salt and then drizzled with Balsamic vinegar. I made them a la The Pioneer Woman for Christmas (I realize I already told you about that but it’s really worth mentioning again) and have also tried them sautéed with pancetta. Delish. Click pics below for recipes. Seriously, do it.

5. My fitbit. I got a fitbit for Christmas and I think it’s awesome. The fitbit is essentially a pedometer, but oh so much more. It tracks my daily steps, mileage, and calories burned. I can also wear it on my wrist at night to track my sleep — how long I slept, how many times I woke up, etc! It wirelessly syncs all the data to my account on their website so I can see what I’ve been up to lately. And unlike traditional pedometers, it can be worn on your bra so you don’t have to worry about it falling off every time you sit down. Total win.

These Are My Obsessions: Cosmetics Edition

So many moons ago (like last summer) I would post some of my favorite things in a little series I called “These Are My Obsessions.” I think it is high time I bring it back but in a bit of a different way — instead of posting my weekly/monthly obsessions I’m going to post them by categories. First up, cosmetics!

I have considered myself a “make-up person” for basically ever.  That’s not to say that I’m drowning in it on a daily basis, but just that I really like make-up and I like to try new products all the time.  As I have gotten older, I’ve expanded my love of make-up into nails and hair and all kinds of beauty products in general.  So just for fun (and to avoid the more serious and chaotic things going on in my life) I thought I’d share some of my current favorite/can’t live without products:

1) Sebastian Shaper Hairspray – $15ish: Credit to Miss PoliSci for turning me on to the magic of Shaper. Seriously, love this hairspray. It holds really well but isn’t sticky or heavy and sprays in a nice mist.  Plus, Ulta has a super good buy-one (or two)-get-one-free deal every few months where you can stock up.  Tip: Store upside down to prevent nozzle from clogging. If it does clog, rinse with warm water and use a safety pin to clear off any build up.

2) e.l.f Studio Cream Eyeliner – $3:  This is a recent Target find and I am really loving it.  I like to buy e.l.f. products when I want to try something new/different but don’t want to spend a lot of money.  I don’t use the brush that it came with to apply it because it is too little but the eyeliner goes on smoothly and doesn’t stay wet like a liquid liner would.  Plus, in Miami it stayed on all night without smudging and looked passable the next day.  (I realize that probably shouldn’t be the standard by which I base my make up selections, but well, that’s how I roll sometimes…)  I’m definitely planning to purchase additional colors.

e.l.f. Cream Eyeliner in Metallic Olive

3) O.P.I. Nail Polish – $8-$10: Yes, I am a nail polish snob.  I really like the consistency of OPI nail polishes as well as the amazeballs color selection.  My fave shades are: Lincoln Park After Dark (fall/winter), Nonfat Soy Half Caff (best neutral, Sephora exclusive), On Collins Avenue (summer/toes) and Flashbulb Fuchsia (summer/toes).

Arbonne Nurturing Day Lotion w/ SPF 20

4) Arbonne Nurturing Day Lotion w/ SPF 20 – $45:  This is my most expensive cosmetic by far but I think it is absolutely worth it. My awesome Arbonne consultant (Miss Dubs!) hooked me up with some great samples when she first got plugged in with Arbonne and I have been hooked on this lotion every since (and I’ve convinced Miss PoliSci to join me in my obsession).  The Day Lotion is light, non-greasy and contains sunscreen — really everything I could want in a moisturizer.  Arbonne also makes a wonderful Hydrating Eye Creme.  I fully support its use as well. One bottle of Day Lotion usually lasts about 3 months for me, so although it is on the pricier side of cosmetics (for me anyway) it does go a long way, which is really nice.

5) Ulta Collection Eyeshadow – $4-$7:  Although I think MAC‘s eyeshadow pots are far superior, they also cost twice as much. Alas, I rely on my handy-dandy neighborhood Ulta to supply a variety of eyeshadow for my blending needs.  Ulta’s shadows go on smoothly, aren’t too powerdy/flaky, and blend well.  My favorite shades are Gold Leaf, Cashmere, & Antique Gold (to create my favorite summer-time “bronze goddess” look).  Ulta usually has a good buy one-get one deal on these (and the rest of their store brand cosmetics) fairly regularly. Plus, it appears that these eyeshadows are on sale for $2 each online right now, which is completely crazy.  (Oh, I will also say that the colors on the website don’t look true-to-life to me, but my computer is a dinosaur so it might just be my crappy monitor quality…)

I am currently on the hunt for the perfect mascara, a work-appropriate lip gloss/stick, a plummy blush (although a mineral blush I recently purchased at Ulta is definitely in the running) and a translucent all-over powder. Suggestions/recommendations?

What are your favorite beauty products? Are you brand loyal or do you like to mix it up? What types of cosmetics are you willing to splurge on?

Note: None of the aforementioned brands/companies are paying me to endorse their products. They don’t even know 1) I exist and 2) I love their products so much! I just wanted to share some of my favorites with you!

These Are My Obsessions. – Vol. IV

Eskimo Joe's Koozies? Heck yes.

1.)  Koozies.  Any cold beverage stays colder, fresher and better when it is in a koozie.  Fact.  I have one in my desk drawer, one on my nightstand and one in my purse.  And yes, I have been known to use it at a restaurant or bar to keep my beverage cooler longer in the sweltering Oklahoma heat.

2.)  E.L.F. Waterproof Eyeliner Pen. It’s like putting on your eyeliner with a fine-tipped Sharpie.  A-mazing.  Especially for people with a healthy fear of liquid eyeliner.  Oh, and it’s only $1.00.  I mean, for a $1.00 it could be the crappiest eyeliner in the world and I’d still buy it because I’m not sure you can even get Wet’n’Wild eyeliner for $1.00 anymore.

3.)  Fall clothes.  I have been drinking them in for weeks.  I cannot wait for the temperatures to drop so I can swaddle myself in cardigans, giant scarves and boots.  All in oranges and reds and goldy-yellows and browns.  I die.

4.)  Sperry Top-siders.  I have been lusting after them for years.  5 to be exact.  Beginning in the fall of my first year of law school and ending last Tuesday, every time I entered Dillard’s I picked up a pair.  Sometimes I tried them on, sometimes I just petted them.  But I wanted them. Forever.  I’m not entirely sure why it took me so long to bite the bullet and buy them.  Somehow they felt like a splurge, even though they aren’t terribly expensive.  There were always just more practical things for me to buy I guess.  Well, I bought them.  And it is LOVE.

5.) College Football.  It’s the most wonderful time of the year…except for Christmas, but college football is still going on during Christmas so it’s even better then.  Anyway, football season is upon us.  My team kicks off tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. CST.  I am giddy.  I love love love the smell of a great tailgate party, the crisp in the air when we’re unpacking the tailgate necessities on a ridiculously early fall morning (I know there won’t be crispness tomorrow — it will be a sticky warmth I’m sure — but still), hoping, wishing and praying that Lee Corso won’t pick your team to win (his pick is the kiss of death), screaming and singing and clapping until it hurts, reading every inch of press about your game and your opponents and then trying to ignore it all, the electric feeling that emanates from everyone and everything on game day, and the unadulterated joy that overwhelms every time your team scores.  Pure magic. Go Pokes.

Real fans wear orange. All the time.

These Are My Obsessions. – Vol. III

1)  The Farmers’ Market. Best. Thing. Ever.  The food is all delicious and it lasts longer than stuff you buy at a grocery store because it’s fresh picked.  Plus, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside about supporting the local economy.

I wish it still cost one cent. It would be glorious.

2) Dubble Bubble.  I’m not sure what it is about the five-cent gum, but I love it.  And to be perfectly honest, I don’t really chew it so much as I eat it. Gross, but oh so delicious.  Other summertime throwback favorites — laffy taffy and now ‘n’ laters.

3) Drop Dead Diva.  I swear I am Jane/Deb.  Like to a T.  Except slightly less girly.  I devoured season one on DVD and have been recording season 2, but somehow I missed the first couple of episodes.  And I can’t find them on Lifetime or Hulu.  So lame.  A bag of dubble bubble to the first person who finds the missing episodes for me to watch (for free)!

4)  The Pioneer Woman.  Ree is my hero.  And I love butter.

5)  Targeted savings accounts.  I set up several with ING Direct because I have a hard time saving and because it helps me to have different accounts for the different things I want to save for — Car, House, Travels, Emergencies, etc.  The accounts were super easy to set up and it takes several business days for me to get my grubby little paws on the money so that is a HUGE plus for me, especially towards the end of the month when my wallet is feeling thin.

1)  The Seventeen Magazine Project.  The author of this blog documented an experiment in which she lived the “Seventeen” lifestyle for 30 days.  She is so articulate, whip-smart and well-written at the ripe young age of 18! Not only am I impressed, but I also think that she’s downright hilarious.

2)  Banana Boat lip balm.  This has been my lip protection of choice for probably 5 years now.  At any given time I own no less than 7 tubes of it.

3)  Arnold Palmers.  The perfectly refreshing summer combo of lemonade and iced tea.  Even better with a splash of Firefly.

4)  The LC Braid.  I’ve been rockin’ this style for a while, but it is my favorite summer bohemian look.  Plus my bangs are whack right now but you can’t tell in the braid!

5)  My Michael Bolton Slacker Radio Station.  I feel as though my love of MB has been referenced enough in previous posts that this obsession really needs no explanation.

What are your summer favorites?  Do you like different cocktails or hairstyles or books during different seasons?  Or are you a loyal consumer year round?
